ISSUE 10 | MAY–JUNE 2020
In this double issue for May and June, you’ll find advice and words of encouragement and admiration from the Superkids coaches. We are all impressed by what you’ve been able to do these last couple months.
This issue is the last of the school year before we take a short break for the summer. Be sure to download the free summer packets below and share them with students’ families and check out the summer classroom organization projects.
P.S. There was a little blip with the April issue, and some subscribers didn’t receive it. To view past newsletters, visit the archive.

Whether or not your school has wrapped up for the year, our coaches offer this advice or “lessons learned” as the case may be.
• |
Coach Emily Larsen: Listen to your heart and know that you represent consistency in your students’ lives. |
• |
Coach Mike Moon: Get the whole family involved in playing games like concentration or go fish using printable word cards or copies of the pages from the Big Book of Blending or Big Book of Decoding. Don’t forget the Superkids Skill-Building Book. It includes more activities and games that you can send home for the kids to do. (Bonus tip: Right now you can download some of these activities and games from our website, under the Language Skill Activities heading.) |

Coach Brenda Crauder: Nature can be a wonderful teacher. Connect math, science, art, poetry, reading, and PE with the outdoors. Start a collection using real objects, like rocks, or collect objects with the same shapes. Get creative! Kids can draw or take pictures with a phone to document their collections.
• |
Coach Jane Vallin: Make communication as short, simple, and straightforward as possible.
• |
Coach Cathy Isbell: Teachers do what teachers have always done; you find a way to reach your students. The classroom may look different, but you are still providing the guidance and instruction you know your students need. Your students love you and miss you, just as much as you love and miss them. During these difficult times, please know you are not alone.

Be sure to remind families that they will have access to the Parent Portal all summer long. Recommend they take advantage of the games and texts in Superkids Online Fun.
• |
Coach Daria Myers: Let parents know that, while schools are closed, Audible is offering free access to stories that you can stream on desktop, laptop, phone, or tablet. They have collections of stories sorted by age: Littlest Listeners, Elementary, Tweens, etc. It’s a great way to keep students connected to books!
• |
Coach Brenda Crauder: Keep kids moving through the summer by introducing families to sites like GoNoodle and Cosmic Kids.
And don’t forget about the Superkids Summer Packets!

Nobody knows exactly what going back to school will look like, but here are some things to keep in mind.
• |
Coach Samantha Stanley: When school returns, expectations need to be altered a bit. Even with all of the work you and your students are putting in, nothing will match that face-to-face instruction you provide, and children might not be where you would normally expect them to be. Take a deep breath and know that you will get them to where they need to be. It will be like riding a bike, and with a little perseverance, it will be like no time has passed.
• |
Coach Brenda Crauder: One thing is certain: Accurate assessment data will be necessary to identify where instruction should begin to address the individual needs of students and move them forward. The Superkids Skill-Building Book and Ten-Minute Tuck-Ins will be more important than ever.
• |
Coach Michelle Martinez: While remote instruction isn’t optional right now, I think teachers will learn from it and embrace it when going back to their classrooms. Teachers can check in remotely when a student is out for a long period of time, have remote conferences with parents that don’t have transportation, check in with students in the summer, etc. We will make positive changes in education due to today’s unfortunate circumstances.
