Each of the strategies (Addition & Subtraction) and factors (Multiplication & Division) covered in the Building Fact Fluency toolkits is taught through three real-world contexts.
Contexts are supported by clusters of related activities, tasks, and games called Lesson Strings. Here’s a look at just three of the numerous routines, tasks, and games that make up the string of lessons for each context and how the lesson concepts progress from concrete contexts to abstract numbers.
Over the course of a Lesson String, students will discuss vibrant images using both informal and mathematical language as they mathematize situations. This allows students to see how number facts connect to a wide variety of mathematical situations and problem types.
Building Fact Fluency: A Toolkit for Addition & Subtraction builds a strong foundation for math success in grades K–2 and beyond. Students learn their single-digit number combinations and the meaning of addition and subtraction and build solid foundations for place value through hands-on work and rich discussion. Resources include the physical items in the toolkit plus a library of online resources for educators.
Building Fact Fluency: A Toolkit for Multiplication & Division builds a strong foundation for math success in grades 3–5 and beyond. Students learn multiplication facts, understand the meaning of multiplication and division, and build solid foundations for multidigit operations and place value. Resources include the hands-on materials in the toolkit plus a library of online resources for educators.
Educator materials include the print Facilitator’s Guide with a comprehensive overview of the toolkit, detailed descriptions of the components, implementation tips, possible uses in different settings, and embedded assessment strategies.
Online resources include 25+ videos containing classroom lessons and reflections, game demonstrations, and assessment strategies.
