Should Students Practice Reading Like They Practice Soccer or Playing the Guitar?
Building Reading Fluency: The Power of Practice in K–2 Classrooms
Several researchers suggest that lack of practice may inhibit reading comprehension by preventing young students from acquiring reading fluency and by limiting the amount of time struggling readers spend reading text. While practice is widely accepted for learning to play sports and musical instruments, some educators view practicing reading as boring and unnecessary.
In this free, on-demand webinar, Dr. Stephanie Stollar addresses misconceptions and positions practice within classroom reading instruction. Participants may earn CE credits for watching this on-demand webinar on the edWeb site.
By the end of the webinar, participants will:
- Learn to define text reading fluency that supports reading comprehension
- Understand the bottleneck created by lack of fluency in text
- Recognize the role of practice in the instructional hierarchy
- Discover opportunities for practice that educators can look for in classroom reading materials to assist with making informed decisions
You'll also receive a short preview of Zaner-Bloser's reading curriculum, The Superkids Reading Program.
